The Mongol Khan is no ordinary musical.
Imagine Shakespeare meets Cirque du Soleil, infused with the mystique of Mongolian Khans. This epic tale makes its Asian Premiere in Singapore.
The Mongol Khan
Visually and choreographically, it surpasses West End shows. Though performed in Mongolian, the impressive Mongolian main cast performance, together with the well-choreographed moves brings the emotions to life. With impressive stage lighting and authentic costumes, it feels like I was transported back to the era of Ghengis Khan.
Mongol Khan tells the fictional story of Archug Khan, a ruler in ancient Mongolia. It is a tragic tale that embodies betrayal, jealousy, lust, mistaken identity, adultery, power struggle and sacrifice. This has all the ingredients of an epic tale. The storyline will not look out of place in a Shakespeare play.
This is NOT a musical. Instead, your eyes will be treated to an unforgettable spectacle. The captivating movements, authentic costumes, and stunning light effects make it deserving of a standing ovation.
Ps: The show is not suitable for younger kids!
Where to sit?
Normally, I would recommend centerstage and up close. But to truly immerse yourself in the show, it is best to sit a little further to see the entire choreography that is taking place on stage. Since the performance is in Mongolian, there are telepromoters on the side and centre. However, the center teleprompters are perched high, so those sitting in the front stalls may have difficulty reading and thus following the show. Do note that the words may be difficult to read for those seated way back.
Verdict
To be honest, I was expecting a musical in English. Just 10 minutes in, I knew this was going to be something different. During the first act, it was a curiosity. By the time the second act ended, that curiosity turned into amazement.
The show may not be what i expected, but it was an experience to savour and one that i will watch again for its stunning visuals.
