Seasonal Cleaning Services: Preparing Your Home for Each Season

Honest Mum's home

With the changing seasons comes the need to keep your house clean, either by yourself or by hiring deep cleaning services to ensure your home remains clean, warm and fit for use irrespective of the changing weather.

There are the challenges presented by each season but deep cleaning can help you keep your home in tip top shape all year round. Below are some tips to help inspire you through the seasons:

  1. Spring cleaning: A new beginning

Declutter and get organized

Start by decluttering your home. Go through cupboards and drawers, working room by room and establish what you no longer need, donating to thrift stores or those in need. If food is out of date, bin, and when it comes to clothes, if you haven’t worn an item for at least 12 months, consider whether you will ever wear it again. Be honest with yourself. If the answer is unlikely, consider donating it or even using a tailor to transform the outfit so you will get more wear out of it.

Deep Clean Carpets and Upholstery

After months of footfall indoors, your carpets have in all likelihood gathered dust, dirt, and allergens. Rent or purchase a carpet cleaner, or hire a professional to deep clean your carpets. Don’t overlook hoovering and cleaning couches, chairs, and any upholstered furnishings too, with the appropriate cleaning materials so everything is clean. Get into habits of removing shoes at the door to preserve cleanliness in the home. We keep a shoe stack at our front door. If you have wooden floors which tend to be cold, wear slippers in doors.

Wash Windows and Curtains

Clean the outside and inside of your home windows for a streak-free shine. Wash your curtains or replace them with lighter, airier fabrics which are easier to clean all year round and let the sunshine in. Consider blinds which are easier to clean.

Clean Appliances

Your kitchen home equipment works hard most days so deserves attention and thorough cleaning. Clean your oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, and microwave regularly and pull home equipment far from the wall and clean beneath and around appliances to remove any built-up dirt.

  1. Summer Cleaning: Keep It Light

Maintain High-Traffic Areas

Summer often means entertaining more guests. Stay on top of high-site visitor areas like entryways and living rooms by regularly sweeping, mopping, or vacuuming.

Dust and allergen control

Regular dusting of cabinets, furniture and under the bed is essential to remove dust and allergens. Consider switching to lighter, breathable fabrics that are allergen-free for bedding to stay healthy and cool.

Stay on Top of Laundry

Summer sports means extra laundry, from swimsuits to beach towels and beyond. Consider creating a designated space for stacking dirty towels and wet clothes to keep dirt at bay and from distributing around the house. Take advantage of the warmer weather and wash more frequently, hanging items to dry outside.

  1. Fall Cleaning: Get ready for cooler weather

Declutter Before the Holidays

Most of the people in Peterborough Ontario, hire a professional house cleaner during fall season in preparation for Thanksgiving and not long after, Christmas and the holidays. Make an inventory of your kitchenware, homeware and storage to ensure you have everything you need for entertaining. Do a pre-Christmas sort of clothes and homeware, making room for the new with gifting season.

Deep Clean Floors

With the hustle of the summer season over, it’s time to deep clean your floors. Whether you have hardwood, tiles, or carpet, or a mix of all depending on the room, a radical cleaning routine will help your house feel brand new.

Window and Door Maintenance

Inspect your windows and doorways for any drafts or cracks. Reseal and update in time for harsher weather. This will also help reduce the price of heating by keeping the cold out.

  1. Winter Cleaning: Cozy and Efficient

Focus on Indoor Air Quality

Since houses have a tendency to be closed up during the course of winter, invest in an air cleanser and open windows when you can to allow fresh air into your home. Dust often and vacuum carpets frequently to stop allergens from settling.

Wash Bedding and Curtains

Wash bedding, comforters and blankets. Heavier fabric helps retain warmth so will get a lot of use over the winter months. Ensure they are regularly cleaned.

Fireplace and Heater Maintenance

If you use a hearth or space warmer, it’s essential to take care of them. Clean out the fireplace or wood-burning stove, and ensure safety tools are nearby such as fire extinguishers. Space warmers should be dusted and checked they work and are safe.
