Last week, our team took a trip to Seattle, and oh my gosh, what a gorgeous part of the world. The water! The pine trees! The coffee! Here are a few photos, if you’d like to see…
First off, Jannelle Sanchez, Maureen Heffernan, Kaitlyn Teer and I met up with the poet Kate Baer in Seattle for a Big Salad event. Kate’s poems have always made us laugh and cry (“I’m a cool poet,” she joked during our talk), and it was really fun to hang out together, eat smoked fish dip, discuss reality TV, and try on lipsticks at Sephora, as one does.
On the first night, we had a delicious dinner at Harry’s Fine Foods…
…and then stayed at their guest house next door. How GORGEOUS is this bedroom with all the matching fabrics?
My bedroom had a giant tub…
…and we swooned over the design details, like this tugboat hook (which I think is by Nickey Kehoe?). When we first arrived, I said, “I love seeing all the little things,” and Kaitlyn said, “Yes! Let’s go corner by corner!” Such a treat.
One of the owners – Julian — stopped by with a bottle of wine in the evening. How cute is he?
On our second day, we were excited to host a Big Salad event, where Kate and I talked about everything from parenting advice to orgasms to female friendship. (You can hear a live recording here, if you’d like; it’s free for everyone.) We LOVED spending time with friends and readers there. I always get choked up at in-person events.
In other news, my dress matched the bathroom!
The next day, we went on a team adventure to the San Juan Islands. We took a SEA PLANE, which terrified us all…
But once we were up in the air, the flight felt dreamy and otherworldly. We saw a whale and Kaitlyn wept.
We landed in Roche Harbor after about 45 minutes.
What a magical place. Have you ever been there? Do you go often?
Our marketing director Maureen’s family has lived in Seattle for five generations, and her dad drove us around in his boat. He told us about the history, complete with classic dad quotes, like “Are you a little cold? Well…you’ll be fine.”
Since our editors — like Kaitlyn, above — live on the west coast, it’s always a treat to see each other in person.
And the wonderful Jannelle.
The air smelled like pine and seaweed, and you could hear water lapping and birds all around.
Finally, as we returned to Seattle, we spotted hot tubs boats on the lake! How hilarious is that? (The boys would flip.) We adored Seattle — thank you so much to the glorious city for such a wonderful stay.
Have you ever been to Seattle? Do you live there? Please tell us!
P.S. A colorful Seattle home with a trick for rainy days, and Sukhie’s pattern-happy week of outfits.
