How to Use Summer Pattern Block Mats with Preschoolers

For preschoolers and young children who are just beginning with pattern blocks, choose the coloured pattern block mats.

These pattern block mats print to scale (see the printing instructions) so children can place the correct shape and colour of pattern block onto the mat to make the picture.

Encourage preschoolers and extend their learning by naming the colours and shapes of each pattern block and talking about how to ‘flip’ and ‘rotate’ shapes when needed.

You could also count together how many pattern blocks were used to make the picture, and count how many of each colour/shape were used.

You could also use the pattern block images to encourage a discussion about the summer, and what pictures make them think of summer. They could even have a try making their own summer pictures from the pattern blocks.

How to Use Summer Pattern Block Mats with Older Children.

Use these summer pattern block printables for kindergarten and older children for a fun, hands-on maths activity. They can use either the coloured pattern block mats, or the outline pattern blocks for an extra challenge.

The outline pattern block mats print to scale (see below for printing instructions) but they require a little extra thinking to decide which block fits the shape without the colours to prompt you, which is great for building spatial awareness. You may still need to encourage your child to ‘flip’ or ‘rotate’ shapes when needed.

Kindergarteners and older children can name the shapes they are using and count the number of each shape used to make the image. And they will love the challenge of coming up with their own summer pattern block designs.

Instructions for Printing Pattern Block Mats

These printable pattern block mats are all A4 sized pdf files, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open them. They will fit to print on US ‘letter sized’ paper.
